Keith welcomes Transport committee recommendations to combat sexual harassment on public transport

Today, Keith Taylor, Green MEP for the South East of England, and his colleagues in the Transport Committee adopted recommendations to combat sexual harassment on public transport, as well as promoting safe public spaces and transit for everyone, day or night. This includes a call for EU countries to set out rules for liability in harassment cases, so that victims of harassment have more clarity about their rights and transport providers can clearly understand their responsibilities.

Keith commented:

“I am proud that gender equality is a fundamental principle of the European Union. It is deeply worrying and unacceptable that so many cases of gender-based verbal and physical violence occur on both public and private transport providers.

The European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality is currently working on a report to enforce the principle of equal treatment between men and women in the access to and supply of goods and services. I urge my colleagues in the committee to take on board the Transport committee’s recommendations to tackle gender inequality and achieve safe and inclusive tourism and transport in Europe for everyone.”

A hard-hitting campaign by TFL last year highlighted that 10% of passengers experience sexual harassment.
